[86] Trying to estimate rice, pasta and spaghetti

Despite having lived by myself for most of the last four years and becoming a pretty proficient cook in the progress, the one thing I have never been able to master is getting the amount of rice, pasta or spaghetti the right size for a portion. You should see this mess in front of me now. Spaghetti bolognese – bolegnese for one, spaghetti for three. It’s stacked up a mile high and I only put a tiny little bit in the pan, I swear! Spaghetti is undoubtedly the hardest to get right; I always make too much, and my occasional efforts at putting less in to compensate always result in three lonely threads sat on the plate at the end. Cooking for one makes it harder because you have an exact amount to target, whereas if you’re cooking for seven you can spread any extra out easily enough or just read more.
